So i’ve been giving some thought to Malifaux. I love the figures, I love the fluff, and I love the mechanics. The only thing I don’t love is my ability to paint. These are beautiful miniatures, and I can’t just seem to do them [Lady]justice ;) . I wanna be a Henchman for Wyrd. I’m pretty psyched about the miniatures and the game, but no one really plays in my local scene (part of the reason why I want to be a Henchman). I’m trying to get the interest rolling at my local store, Realm of Heroes, but I’m not sure if the game would appeal to many of the older wargamers. Right now I’ve got two starter boxes, Lady Justice and Nicodem. Two very opposing crews, with two very different approaches to the game. Lady Justice is very in your face, and Nicodem relies more on getting minions on the board and swarming your opponent, I just don’t know how to set up a proper demo for the game. A lot of this post is rambling. I’m trying to organize my thoughts around this cool game, and how to best present it to the store owner. I basically have to sell this game to him as though I’m Wyrd Miniatures, and I want him to carry my product (even though I don’t get any of the profit).

Maybe I’ll just have to wing it, and hope for the best, though this does mean that I need to finish painting those poor buggers.

I know its been a long time since any “decent” content has been posted here on weazlrants, I believe the last quality post was “Welcome to WordPress” but I could be wrong. So the reason why Weazl and I have been silent is because the world has taken us in different directions. Last May, he graduated from our university, and I’ve recently started student teaching in my hometown. So we haven’t been able to play many games together, or any games at all. I think my last game was Warhammer Fantasy Battles about three weeks ago (I was stomped). And I think the last game Weazel played was against my Trolls. He blew up half of his own army, it was sweet!

So here’s a quick update:

“Slow and Purposeful” has been put on the back burner while I teach, I’m not sure I can dedicate the time to edit, compile, and record a podcast. But I might be on the look out for some people to help. I just want to be on one, and think we could do something interesting with it. So thats that…

My Armies: Since the theft of my blood angels, I’ve done about zero painting. My Imperial Guard have just been sitting in cases, and I’m worried about finding the time to strip them so I can start painting them, something I will blog about either here or on DakkaDakka. I’ve painted 2 trolls, trying to slowly get that army painted, in case I can get into a slow grow Warmachine and Hordes league. I’ve also been trying to paint my Malifaux figs, and that is going horribly. I realized just how bad of a painter I am lol. Also, the scale and detail on the models does not lend themselves to my paint style which works well with big open areas on the model, and room for washes ;) .

On the internets: DakkaDakka has just started a really cool “community army” called Waaagh Dakka. Led by Warboss Yakface (admin and owner of the site) and Big Mek Legoburner (the other admin), Waaagh Dakka is about bringing the community together as a giant Ork Army. The idea is simple, split up the pieces of the waaagh between the ranks of the site, from Admins, moderators, DCM (Dakka Contributing Members), and members at large. Each member is asked to join a mob, whether its a grot, a Big Gunz mob, or even slugga and shoota boyz. Each member is given free reign to have the model “represent” himself in Ork form. The only restriction is the color scheme. This provides almost limitless ideas for members. The best I’ve seen so far is MeanGreenStompa, a Stormboyz Nob, and WarOne’s deffkopta (more of an ork converted to wearing a jet pack with propeller blades, and massive buzzsaws and rokkits. Every member is encouraged to join the Waagh, and yours truly is the Runtherder for a Big Gunz mob, and I’m looking for 2 Guns, 12 Grots, 3 Ammo Runts, and a squig hound.

See ya next time!

Hobby Basics – The Painter’s Touch

Posted: 26th July 2011 by Alfndrate in Uncategorized

If anyone has listened to Episode 6 of The Screaming Heretic then you would have heard the Guys of Gaming (sorry theJen and SheSwizzy) talk about the hobby basics. And while they gave out some fantastic information I wanted to take the time to show talk a little more about this, and show some different sides of the painting world.

Brushes: If you are a beastly painter, and can afford to it, I suggest buying the Kolinsky Sable brushes, but if you’re new like me, then I suggest something a little more user friendly.

The brushes I use are a combination of the Army Painter brushes. They have both synthetic and natural hair brushes (the only one I dislike of theirs is the Wargamer: Regiment brush, a natural hair brush that just falls to pieces (I’m on my second one with hardly any use to either of them). The brushes are of a good quality, I use them for washes, dry brushing, detail, highlighting (when I can be bothered to do highlighting).

When first starting out, you want to get a good variety of brushes that will allow you to do the most basic things when just starting out, basecoats, washes, some basic highlighting and picking out of details. Now I don’t claim to be a master painter, but when looking to do this, and you don’t want to spend a lot of money, I suggest the following of the Army Painter brushes: Wargamer: Character, Wargamer: Monster, Hobby: Highlighting, and Hobby: Precise Detail. You don’t need all of those, but if you get the first three brushes, you can do the majority of the things you will need a brush for. They can drybrush, but its not recommended because it can ruin a brush. I use those for about 90% of my painting (with the last 10% being a small drybrush I have).

These brushes can be bought for about 20 bucks total, I know that Joe was talking about buying a 15 dollar brush for painting your miniatures

Cleaning Your Brushes: This is a quick one, I’ve used this for art classes, mini painting, anything that requires a brush: This is your savior. This brush soap is amazing, put a few drops of water, drag the brush through it and get it soaped up and rinse, do this several times (5-7 per brush) and it will help shape the brush and restore it to its former awesomeness. I use this after every painting session, and my brushes are almost as good as new (with the exception of my Wargamer: Regiment brush…).

Paints: I use mainly Vallejo paints, the dropper bottles help me control the levels of paint I want, and allow me to measure paint droplets for thinning. I recommend trying different brands, if you can get your hands on different brands of the same color (Like Blood Red is a good recommendation to test the variations). See what you type of paint bottles you want to use, some people like to paint from the pot, some people use a wet palette, it comes down to how you want to paint. I use a combination of all types, but mostly Vallejo and their droppers. I do suggest spending the money and getting Games Workshop’s foundation paints, they work amazingly well, and they’re the only GW paints I still buy. Careful here as you can spend several hundred dollars on paints alone.

Palettes: How you access your paint is all up to your personal preference as well. Many people will paint straight from the pot, but this dries out your paints, and can cause a big mess if you accidentally knock your paint bottle over.

Wet Palettes: I could never quite get this down, its useful… from what I’ve seen, there are better authorities on this idea

Painting from the Pot: This is the most basic way to get to your paint, just shake up the paint, and thin it with a little water, etc…

Palette: This is what I use, you can use a big fancy one from a painting/art store, or do what I did. I bought a 79 cent floor tile from the Home Depot, it can hold paints on it, I can mix them, I can do whatever I want, and I don’t have to worry about it, because I just take a razor blade and scrape it off when I’m done, no muss, no fuss. The downfall with this one is that my paints tend to dry out on the palette, but its okay, because I only mix small batches of paint at the same time.

Monstrous Creature Radio

Posted: 15th July 2011 by Alfndrate in Uncategorized

So I’ve been debating with the idea of recording a 2 hour or a 2.5 hour radio show. The idea of this show is a 1 man podcast (for the most part). To be run like a standard radio show that you might hear on your car radio, etc… The problem with this is that no one wants to hear someone babble on and on for 2+ hours, especially if he doesn’t have someone to talk with on the podcast. So I was thinking of supplementing segments with actual music. The problem with this is that music has licensing fees. I can use royalty free music, there are some good websites out there. The Independent Characters use Mevio.com and websites like Miniwargaming.com use Incompotech. Both of these websites have their benefits, but its not music that everyone would think of when they say a radio show. I would obviously be talking about things in the hobby, news, rumors, etc… and would use music to fill up time and to give anyone listening a break from my voice.

Possible Show Segments:

News and Rumors

Hobby and Games

Show themed fiction (ala: aethervox)

Product reviews

Whatever else catches my fancy

Let me know what you think!

Warpath – A 40k Killer?

Posted: 5th July 2011 by Alfndrate in Uncategorized

Not at the moment it’s not…

This post will hopefully be expanded as I read over more and more of the rules, but at the moment I’m not entirely impressed… The biggest thing that I’ve noticed is that the 1 inch rule we see in 40k is used with several models, including models in your own unit…

GenCon?

Posted: 30th June 2011 by Dimwitweasel in Uncategorized

After our trip to Origins Game Fair, Alf and I started contemplating planning a trip to GenCon. I’m not sure if we’re going to make it, but it would definitely be a blast. If you don’t believe me, take a look at this pic from our last trip to Indy:
